First Patient Treated with New Linear Accelerator at UZ Ghent Hospital
€6 Million Investment Completed in Record Time!
It was back in early 2005 that UZ Ghent first approached R. Maes NV about building a brand new oncology centre for the hospital.
The project involved creating a new modular building composed of two bunkers (concrete constructions with walls thicker than 1 meter) complete with all the requisite logistical support areas.

The new building also houses a brand new state-of-the-art radiation treatment machine.
Given the challenges of the project, particularly the tight deadline, UZ Ghent naturally preferred to rely on R. Maes NV's experience and expertise, giving us the official go-ahead for the project in mid-May.
We got down to work immediately and by mid-June, we were already busy preparing and ere cting the structural frames that would form the foundation of the new building.
In October, we began installing the medical equipment and got started with all the interior finishing work.
The new linear accelerator was finally brought inside the building on 17 and 18 October.
We worked at record pace under extreme time pressure, but never lost sight of our objective of delivering the high quality required by this important project.
The new centre proudly welcomed its very first test patient on 28 December 2005.
Key Figures for the Project:
The total budget for the project was €6 million (excluding VAT), broken down as follows:
- €2 million for the basic construction works
Works contracted out to Denys NV.
- €2.5 million for medical equipment
Works contracted out to Elekta NV.
- €1.5 million for technical installations and interior finishing work
There were three phases to the project, outliENG as follows:
Full implementation including the planning and coordination of all technical installations such as HVAC, electricity, data and telephone wiring, plumbing and medical gases.
All of the interior finishing works.
Planning and coordination of the entire project with two critical milestones: delivery of the linear accelerator on 17 October and treatment of the first test patient on 28 December.
R. Maes NV achieved all of the project objectives within the required timeframe.
This experience is an excellent example of how good teamwork and cooperation can lead to a successful project.
